  • England bowling coach Chris Silverwood in running to become the head coach

  • Kirsten has led India and South Africa to the top of the Test rankings in the past
  • The ECB were thrown earlier this week by the late withdrawal of Alec Stewart

Chris Silverwood is back in the reckoning to become England’s new head coach after a chaotic week in which Alec Stewart pulled out of contention and Gary Kirsten’s job interview did not go according to plan.

Silverwood, currently in charge of England’s fast bowlers, had been tipped as a potential interim coach for this month’s tour of New Zealand — possibly keeping the seat warm for Kirsten to take over for England’s visit to his native South Africa in December.

But Sportsmail understands Kirsten’s interview, conducted by ECB chief executive Tom Harrison and managing director Ashley Giles among others, was less impressive than the board had hoped, leaving Silverwood, 44, with a chance of claiming the top job only two years after joining England’s staff.

Kirsten, who has led India and South Africa to the top of the Test rankings, is not yet out of the running but had been under the impression the ECB were likely to rubber-stamp his appointment on Thursday — the day after he was interviewed.

Instead, the board —who were thrown earlier this week by the late withdrawal of Surrey director of cricket Stewart for family reasons — are likely to take more time to consider their decision.

Kirsten, 51, has a famously relaxed approach to coaching and sources believe he takes the same approach to job interviews.

As one put it: ‘He’s not a powerpoint presentation kind of guy.’
